Coptic: Chronological phase in Egypt lasting from the end of the Roman period (c. 395 AD), until the Islamic conquest (c. 641 AD). It is now more accurately described as the ‘Christian’ period and is roughly equivalent to the Byzantine period elsewhere in the Near East. The Coptic language and writing systems combines Greek letters with six signs taken from the Demotic script. In modern times, we still employ the Coptic writing in the liturgies and Biblical texts of the Coptic church.
