The appliqués, cast in high carat gold, each show a couchant hare in an alert pose facing to the left with prominent elongated ears and attentive open eyes.

On the reverse, that is incuse and coarsely worked out, there are two stretched out loops for attachment. The three circular ornaments, therefore, present at the hare’s tail and at the feet, will have a symbolic meaning that is unknown.

These delicate objects probably have served as an adornment on daily dress, perhaps being an attachment onto a girdle.

Provenance:
Formerly in the Collection of Derek J. Content, England (1970’s).
Reputably discovered as a treasure in the area of the Black Sea, circa 1960.
